The 10 hidden gems to watch for during Milano Design Week

Some people travel to Milan from around the world for its grand fashion weeks. Others visit the city to go sightseeing or to try the delicious food. And then there are those of us who come to this famous city for its design.

Milano Design Week, which takes place this year from April 16 to 21, is a transformative time of the year for the city. While the main event Salone del Mobile.Milano 2024 is held at Rho Fiera and showcases hundreds of pieces of furniture and interiors, something magical happens throughout the entire city.

With 1,326 events taking place from Brera to Crescenzago – a 10.5% increase compared to last year according to Il Sole 24 Ore – almost every corner in town becomes a design hub to discover.

While most people familiar with Fuorisalone already know the top places to go (Superstudio, Brera Design District, Università Statale, and more), what about other hidden gems in the city?

This is your unofficial guide to discovering not just what’s popular but also the best-kept secrets around the city.

1. Alcova

Alcova serves as a platform for designers, companies, institutions, and researchers delving into the future of design. It brings together visionaries shaping contemporary design culture through ground-breaking work in living environments, products, systems, materials, and technological innovation.

Emerging as one of the premier destinations to explore unconventional design, Alcova continues to gain popularity. Last year, visitors could explore a variety of installations and design objects within the premises of an abandoned meat factory. They could even enjoy freshly made cookies from one of the booths.

This event, taking place during Fuorisalone, will be open from April 17 to 19. Here, visitors can explore five of Vogue’s editorial rooms, creatively reimagined by the (AB)NORMAL studio (@abnormal_story studio), resembling both the magazine’s layout and the doors of a closet.
