Milan desperately needs a fashion museum, ASAP

Entitled ‘Memorabile: Ipermoda,’ this forthcoming fashion exhibition is primed to captivate audiences under the curation of Maria Luisa Frisa, a renowned fashion theorist, curator, and full professor at the Iuav University of Venice. Created in collaboration with CNMI-Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana, the event is set to debut at Rome’s MAXXI-Museo nazionale delle arti del XXI secolo in November 2024.

Everything so far has been impeccable; in fact, it’s been splendid and captivating. The proliferation of exhibitions celebrating fashion as a universal culture of beauty, accessible to all, is a welcome sight worldwide – and particularly in Italy.

However, there’s another lingering concern among industry insiders as to why a dedicated fashion museum hasn't been established yet despite the proliferation of exhibitions. This is especially surprising in Milan, one of the Big Four and a global capital of fashion

Although there is an urgent call for a fashion museum in Milan, the journey towards its realisation is filled with challenges. It requires substantial financial backing, investments, and unwavering commitment. However, fulfilling this vision would be a dream come true, not only for fashion enthusiasts in the Lombardy region but also for the broader Made in Italy industry.

Even Franca Sozzani, the esteemed editor-in-chief of Vogue Italia until her passing in December 2016, had a dream of creating a dedicated space to celebrate the world of Italian creativity.

A museum that showcases Made-in-Italy creative works would be the ultimate destination for hosting exhibitions like the forthcoming ‘Memorabile: Ipermoda,’ and for curating archives of clothing and accessories that would be accessible to all aspiring fashion students. The question remains: will this dream become a reality, or will it remain a mere aspiration? The urgency for such an institution is greater now than ever before.
