FORMAFANTASMA

TEILEN
Formafantasma is an Italian duo based in Amsterdam, where they moved to attend the master course at Design Academy Eindhoven, where they graduated in July 2009. Since then, Formafantasma has developed a coherent body of work focused on experimental material investigations. From edible to primitive materials, from the intangible source such as light, to waste: their work is always strongly connected to the territory and it always explores the relationship between tradition and local culture, with a critical approach to sustainability. What is really innovative in their creative process is that they use the meaning of objects as a cultural media: for Andrea and Simone, function has an ethical message. A statement well explained in their last exhibition Cambio: an immersive and a metaphysical journey into wood. With their authorial sign, they are bridging craft and industry, object and user. What they are interested in is shaping links between their research-based process and a wide design industry. For all these reasons Formafantasma could be considered one of the most prominent and inspiring duo on the international cultural stage: more than designers they are activists. During the conversation, part of the Enhancing The Future project, they did an overview of their unique pieces, explaining how much does the relationship between humans and their territory impact on the duo design process, their idea of sustainability, what designers and architects should do to be more responsible and how the industrial production should be rethought to be more sustainable. About the pandemic, Formafantasma talked about the opportunity to rethink objects and spaces in order to have a positive impact on people’s health and wellbeing.
