rahul mishra wins 2013/14 iwp
The young Indian designer Rahul Mishra, Master in Fashion Design at Istituto Marangoni Milano in 2007, is the winner of the InternationalWoolmark Prize 2013/2014. The final of the competition, organised by the Woolmark Company, was held at the Triennale Design Museum in Milano on February 21.
The International Woolmark Prize, sponsored by the trademark that protects Merino wool, rewards young designers for their skill at innovating with natural fibres, especially wool. The final of the second edition of IWP was held during Milano Fashion Week, with a jury made up of leading figures in the fashion industry such as Franca Sozzani of Italian Vogue, Colette Garnsey of Australian Wool Innovation and Frida Giannini of Gucci.
Out of the 5 collections of Merino wool submitted by the winners of the semifinals "zone" (Asia, Australia, Europe, the USA, and India and the Middle East), it was Mishra’s capsule collection inspired by the lotus flower - a symbol of purity - and the metamorphosis of Earth in the last century that won over the jury. Mishra’s collection was chosen for his craftsmanship and expertise in tailoring and embroidery, but especially for his ability to give voice to the potential of his homeland, India.
In 2009 Rahul Mishra was hailed as one of 20 young Indians destined to change the face of India according to INDIA VISION- 2020. In 2011, he presented his philosophy and his work in a documentary on Indian handlooms produced for the National Geographic Channel. In 2012, the International Cotton Council named him Best Womenswear Designer.
IWP 2013/2014 awarded Mishra a prize of $100,000 AUD and the chance for his collection to be distributed among some of the biggest fashion retailers worldwide, including David Jones, 10 Corso Como and Saks of Fifth Avenue.
