How much does style impact music?

The 74th edition of the renowned Festival di Sanremo has drawn to a close. The show lasted for five intense evenings, featuring over 6 hours of live television per night, with a blend of music, entertainment, and, notably, high fashion.

Over time, Italy’s premier TV event has evolved from its roots as a mere music competition to become a captivating showcase of couture, luxury brands, and impressive jewellery, all enhancing the glamorous presence of the competing artists, meticulously curated by their celebrity stylists. Undoubtedly, style has always played a crucial role in music, serving as a fundamental element that defines the genre and era of a composition while also shaping the cultural identity and artistic vision of its performer.

The Ariston venue dazzled with exquisite creations, serving as a runway for tailored and personalised outfits, each meticulously crafted for the spotlight: from the gritty elegance of Valentino gracing Loredana Bertè to the allure of Etro by Marco De Vincenzo, seen on the winner Angelina Mango. Dolce&Gabbana also made an appearance, adding a fierce sexiness to Annalisa's outfit.

The atmosphere sizzled with fashion fervour as Ghali and Mahmood rocked edgy ensembles by Loewe and Maison Margiela, while Il Volo exuded timeless allure in Emporio Armani. Sangiovanni turned heads in GCDS, and Mr. Rain made a bold statement in Fendi. However, stealing the show was Giorgia, who reigned supreme in Dior by Maria Grazia Chiuri, alongside the charismatic host Amadeus. Together, they ignited the stage with a feminist declaration of style and glamour.

The Ssheena brand – established by Sabrina Mandelli, an alumna of Istituto Marangoni – also curated the wardrobe for competing singer Fred De Palma, which provided an exceptional opportunity for exposure to the vast audience of over 14 million viewers tuning in to the TV music competition each evening.

As for fashion trends, total black and off-white ensembles commanded attention, while jackets, shirts, and even trousers shimmered with heaps of sequins, as exemplified by the iconic ‘gold tracksuit’ by Valentino worn by Mahmood for his final performance. All-over leather pieces were prevalent, particularly oversized dresses and biker pants. The most notable trend, however, was the increasing acceptance of gender-fluid fashion, blending traditional masculine and feminine aesthetics in a new and liberating way. In essence, the fashion world is evolving towards minimalism, where individual personality is the key to stand out.
