Rachel Scott takes the helm at Proenza Schouler, blending Caribbean style with luxury fashion for global recognition

Jamaican Designer Rachel Scott Drives Proenza Schouler into a New Era

The fashion world has been buzzing ever since Rachel Scott, the founder of Diotima, was announced as the new creative director of Proenza Schouler.

Known for its cool New York minimalism and intellectual edge, the house is now poised to enter a new chapter that promises both continuity and a fresh vision. With Istituto Marangoni alumna Rachel Scott at the helm, this appointment is more than just a change in leadership. It’s history in the making, guided by confidence in one of the most promising emerging designers of the new generation.

Rachel Scott’s Journey from Kingston to Global Luxury Fashion

Rachel Scott’s journey demonstrates that talent, determination, and authenticity can open doors to the most prestigious opportunities. Born in Jamaica, she travelled through the fashion capitals of the world, graduating from Istituto Marangoni in Milan and refining her skills at Costume National. She then worked at New York powerhouses, including J. Mendel, Elizabeth and James, and Rachel Comey.

In 2021, she launched her own label, Diotima, named after the mistress of Eros in Plato’s Symposium.

Diotima: Caribbean Heritage and European Craft in Luxury Fashion

The Diotima collections are conceived between Jamaica and New York, yet they also draw inspiration from the designer’s time in England and Italy, using European materials. The brand’s signature crochet pieces, which form the essence of Diotima, are crafted in Jamaica.

Rachel Scott aims to present a captivating interpretation of Caribbean style, embracing the future while remaining firmly rooted in her homeland’s heritage. Among the standout designs are the poetic crochet dresses and jackets featuring crochet panels at the waist.

Diotima’s NYFW Debut: A Hit Among Critics and Buyers

Debuting at New York Fashion Week in September 2023 at a gallery in Chelsea, Diotima quickly caught the attention of the fashion industry, becoming one of the most beloved names among journalists, buyers and fashionistas in the Big Apple.

Rachel Scott’s Rapid Rise: CFDA Awards and Industry Recognition

Rachel Scott didn’t just build a brand; she established a legacy in record time. Diotima has earned her some of the industry’s highest accolades, including the CFDA Emerging Designer of the Year award in 2023 and the CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year award in 2024, surpassing fashion giants such as Marc Jacobs and Tory Burch.

Rachel Scott has been awarded CFDA American Womenswear Designer of the Year in 2024, which represents one of the industry’s highest accolades

She has also received multiple nominations and awards from the LVMH Prize, Woolmark Prize, Fashion Trust US, and other prestigious organisations. These achievements have positioned her as one of the most exciting talents in fashion, proving that her craft-driven approach resonates with both critics and consumers seeking authenticity.

Rachel Scott Champions Diversity in Luxury Fashion Leadership

Here’s the real breakthrough: Rachel Scott is not just another name among fashion’s creative directors; she is a Jamaican woman leading a globally recognised luxury house. In an industry still overwhelmingly dominated by men—especially at the top—this represents a significant moment.

For the Fall/Winter 2026 season, Rachel Scott will be the only woman of colour directing a major fashion house. Her position at Proenza Schouler sends a message that resonates far beyond the runway: the future of fashion is diverse, and its leadership must reflect that diversity.

Rachel Scott Blends Heritage and Innovation at Proenza Schouler

Rachel Scott has made it clear that her mission at Proenza Schouler is not about breaking from the past, but rather evolving it. Founders Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez established a distinctive DNA characterised by cool sophistication, and Scott intends to honour that while infusing her own perspective.

As she explained: “There’s a beautiful legacy here. I think it has to move forward.” This blend of reverence and renewal is precisely what the brand needs: continuity, but with a bold, new edge.

Rachel Scott Bridges Diotima and Proenza Schouler in Modern Fashion

Interestingly, Rachel Scott will not abandon Diotima. She believes that the women of both Diotima and Proenza Schouler share an “intellectual essence” that is thoughtful, modern, and expressive. This dual role is not a conflict; rather, it represents a dialogue. Each brand informs the other, creating a richer narrative across her work.

It’s a rare opportunity to lead a beloved heritage house while also nurturing an emerging fashion label deeply rooted in culture and craftsmanship.

Rachel Scott’s First Full Proenza Schouler Collection to Debut Feb 2026

Fashion fans won’t have to wait long to see Rachel Scott’s vision in action. After contributing to the Spring 2026 collection as a consultant, her first full collection for Proenza Schouler is set to debut in February 2026. All eyes will be on that runway, as it is expected to be one of the most anticipated shows of the year.

Rachel Scott Redefines Leadership in Luxury Fashion

Rachel Scott’s appointment is bigger than Proenza Schouler, bigger than Diotima, bigger than Fashion Week. It is about rewriting the rules of who gets to lead, who shapes aesthetics, and who defines what luxury looks like.

For emerging fashion designers, especially women and designers of colour, Rachel Scott’s rise is proof that the industry can—and must—make space for new voices. For fashion lovers, it presents an opportunity to witness the merging of creativity, heritage, and diversity into something truly transformative.

Rachel Scott Elevates Craft and Inclusivity in Luxury Fashion

Fashion thrives on change, but real change is rare. Rachel Scott’s ascent to creative director of Proenza Schouler is one such moment.

With her unique blend of craftsmanship, intellect, and authenticity, she is not only shaping the future of one of America’s most iconic houses but also showing the world that fashion’s next chapter will be richer, more inclusive, and far more inspiring. Her story should not be viewed as an exception; it should be seen as a beginning.
