A Walk Through Art and Fragrance for the Students of Paris

Art and fragrance. A natural pairing, almost inevitable. At Istituto Marangoni Paris, they know it well: today, fragrances are no longer told solely through olfactory notes — they engage in dialogue with design, architecture, and contemporary art. Across the city, select boutiques transform the simple act of smelling into a cultural experience, placing perfumes alongside artworks and design pieces in a sophististicated creative exchange.

Students from the short course in Luxury Beauty Management stepped directly into this universe through an immersive walk into the heart of haute perfumery, discovering some of the capital’s most inspiring flagships. Discreet addresses known to insiders, alongside new openings already destined for cult status. More than a tour, it was a curated journey — enriched by conversations with founders and creative directors — offering rare insight into how a brand is conceived, crafted, and ultimately narrated.

The first stop: Henry Jacques, in its maison on avenue Montaigne, discreetly frequented by international stars and royal families. Here, perfume is elevated craftsmanship: precious distillations crafted from the finest natural raw materials. Fragrances are presented alongside antique crystal flacons, handcrafted cases, Oriental artworks, and rare prints. The atmosphere evokes an exquisitely elegant contemporary cabinet de curiosités, where eras and styles intertwine as one discovers roses, jasmine, and vanilla reveal interpretations unlike any other.

From avenue Montaigne, the walk continued to rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, an emblem of Parisian luxury. In a discreet courtyard lies the boutique of Marc-Antoine Barrois, in the distinguished company of Hermès, Alaïa, Prada, Gucci, and Carita. The space is intimate, elevated by bespoke artworks imagined by architect-artist Antoine Bouillot. Yet the true enchantment unfolds downstairs: a warm, cocoon-like living room with a generous canapé and a vinyl collection to explore while discovering the house’s iconic fragrances — 683, Ganymede, Tilia, and the recent Aldebaran. Here, scent bypasses the intellect and speaks directly to emotion.

Crossing rue Royale and going toward rue Saint-Honoré, the journey made a detour to rue d’Alger. At number 5, Maison Francis Kurkdjian opened its first flagship in 2009, now complemented by a space dedicated to olfactory culture. Not simply a boutique, but a place where fragrance is explored through a multisensory lens. The current exhibition features artist and photographer Christelle Boulé, who has created works beginning with a silver gelatin image of a single drop of perfume. The maison’s most emblematic creations are thus transformed into visual “portraits,” striking in their chromatic intensity and layered creative process.

The walk concluded in the language of color, back on rue Saint-Honoré with a stop at Ex Nihilo. In its new gallery space, blue art installations — the brand’s signature hue — by artist Justin Weiler have been created to celebrate twelve years of this independent and free-spirited maison, a pioneer in bespoke services and personalized fragrances.

A journey that revealed to students how, in Paris, art and perfume speak the same language: that of modern, unbounded creativity.
