Istituto Marangoni Firenze students in Arts Management collaborate with Phillips Auction House

The prestigious auction house Phillips has chosen to collaborate with the students of the Master in Arts Management of Istituto Marangoni Firenze for a special Industry Project, giving them the opportunity to work as curators for a contemporary art auction.

As the world’s premier art trading platform, Philips not only brings together the buying and selling of contemporary art, design, jewellery, watches, and photography, but also provides professional advice to private clients and corporations in regards to sales, exhibitions, museum partnerships, appraisals, valuations, and other financial services.

Divided into two groups, the students worked focusing on the brief given to them by Margherita Solaini, Associate Director of the 20th Century & Contemporary Art department of the auction house: women of the art world.

Both groups worked not only on the concept and the research for the artists involved and their works, but also on the consequent determination of the prices of each lot, on the location search for the display of the lots, on the preparation of the exhibition, on the event planning and on the communication and marketing strategy.

The concept behind the selection of works for the “New Rules” auction, curated by Kristina Bramenko, Jonathan Paonetti, Cecilia Perozziello and Yu Ze, revolves around the female perception of the world order. An auction with a selection of pieces created by female artists re-interpreting the surreal and cubist paintings made by male masters that used to dominate the art history of the previous century, addressing the misuse of masculine power for awakening consciousness, connection with nature, wisdom and intuition.

“That's what she said”, curated by Sol Cànovas Del Castillo, Trishla Jain, Zoe Kooren and Massimo Romanelli is an auction dedicated to the artworks of 24 emerging and mid-career artists that creates a dialogue between the male and the female gaze about women: how certain stereotypical standards, sexuality, humour or even political statements about the female figure and other related topics are seen and considered from a feminine point of view.

“That’s what she said”, indeed, is a common catchphrase found among the urban english dictionary that takes innocent or regular statements out of context and transforms them in order to sound sexual or lewd.
