Family Business Management in Fashion
The course aims to provide the participants with the distinctive strategic mindset and managerial skills for the prevailing type of company within the fashion industry: family businesses. The participants will become familiar with the peculiar organization, governance and finance of family firms, learning how to manage succession issues and preserve the heritage of the corporate in the future.
Family firms represent the most widespread business model globally, accounting approximately for 70% of companies. Family businesses embody a relevant source of growth, as they can generate up to 90% of the GDP of a country and cover up to 80% of job opportunities. Research demonstrates that family enterprises differ from non-family corporations, requiring a distinctive strategic mindset and a unique set of managerial skills.
A large number of family businesses operates in the fashion industry, covering all kind of companies in term of size of the business (large, medium and small), business model (luxury conglomerate, haute couture, ready-to-wear, fast-fashion...), market (women, men, youth, kids, bridal...) and sub-industry (apparel, leather goods, active, underwear…).
The distinctive features of family companies denote a competitive advantage especially in the context of luxury, where corporate heritage, long-term vision, specialization, innovation, sense of belonging to the organization, long-lasting relationships with business partners within the supply chain represent the most important strategic factors for success.
During the course, participants will learn how to preserve the heritage of these companies in the future, effectively managing succession and mastering the peculiar organization, governance and finance of family firms.
To this end, the program has a strong focus on innovation and business development, deepening the opportunities offered by new technologies as artificial intelligence and big data, as well as the challenges of internationalization and omni-channel consumer behaviors. Furthermore, the course will enable students to strengthen their managerial skills within the fashion family business, mastering subjects as project management, business ethics, product development, digital branding, marketing, buying and business planning.
