We are delighted to welcome you to our School of Fashion and Design and would like to begin sharing key information to help you prepare for your experience and settle into life in London.

Explore our London campus and discover the spaces that support student life and creativity, including design studios, computer labs, pattern-cutting rooms, a fully equipped professional photo studio, classrooms, collaborative spaces, and student facilities throughout the School.

Prior to starting to attend a taught degree course at Istituto Marangoni London students are required to finalise their enrolment.  

The school communicates to enrolling students both generic and departmental joining instructions for their induction and registration, making it clear that these arrangements are aimed at integrating them fully as registered students.

Students must provide the following before to be formally invited to start the course:

  • copy of a valid passport (and VISA documents if applicable)
  • true copy of final school/test certificates plus certified translation (if applicable)
  • signed offer form (and CAS preview form if applicable)
  • proof of tuition fee payment (or proof of funds letter)

The completion of the application process should normally be finalised 3 weeks prior to the start of the course. After the deadline Istituto Marangoni London can’t guarantee to offer a place since there are limited spots available

As part of the induction process, students will take part in the Welcome Week, designed to introduce them to life at IML. During this time, students will complete registration, meet academic staff and fellow students, attend introductory sessions to become familiar with the faculty members, campus and different student services including careers and wellbeing support.

Please ensure you have prepared the following before travelling:
  • Passport and visa documentation
  • Confirmed accommodation
  • Enrolment confirmation
  • Sufficient financial resources for initial expenses
  • Travel documents
  • Prescription medication and supporting documents (if applicable)
  • UK plug adapter and essential study equipment

Once you arrive in London you will need to:

  • Finalise your enrolment at the School
  • Settle into your accommodation
  • Register for healthcare

To help you settle in quickly, we recommend completing the following:

  • Open a UK bank account
  • Obtain a UK SIM card
  • Register with a GP (doctor) – with support from the School
  • Set up a travel card or payment method (Oyster card or contactless)

Students have access to a variety of affordable and sustainable travel options while studying in London

Eligible students can apply for an 18+ Student Oyster Photocard, offering discounted travel on Transport for London (TfL) services, and a 16–25 Railcard, which provides up to one-third off rail fares across the UK. 

In addition, students may wish to explore alternative modes of transport, such as cycling, through schemes including Santander Cycles, as well as purchasing a bike.

 Taking advantage of these travel options can help students reduce commuting costs, travel more sustainably, and make the most of their time in London.

Opening a UK Bank Account

Students who wish to open a UK bank account will usually need to be fully enrolled and may be asked to provide a passport, visa documents, proof of UK address and a bank letter from the School.

Students are encouraged to speak to their home bank before travelling, especially if they plan to transfer money internationally or use an overseas bank card in the UK.

 

Cost of Living

Living costs in London vary depending on accommodation, transport and lifestyle. Students should make sure they have enough funds available for their first few months, including accommodation, food, travel, mobile phone costs and personal expenses.

In addition, students can access advice on a range of practical matters, including healthcare registration, financial and travel support, and other aspects of student life in London

Students are encouraged to arrange health insurance before arrival. The UK’s healthcare system is provided through the National Health Service (NHS), which offers access to a wide range of medical services, and students staying in the UK for an extended period may be eligible to use NHS services, typically accessed by registering with a local General Practitioner (GP).

Health Insurance

The School has partnered with APRIL International, a provider of tailored insurance solutions for students studying abroad. These plans offer 24/7 assistance, access to healthcare services, and flexible coverage options depending on the length of stay.

Having private health insurance can help students access medical care more quickly and avoid unexpected healthcare costs while living in the UK.

Istituto Marangoni London also offers on-site student support, including access to counselling services. Students can seek confidential support for their mental health and wellbeing, with guidance available to help manage personal challenges and ensure a positive and balanced student experience

Registering with a GP

After arriving in London, students are encouraged to register with a local GP as soon as possible. Registration is free and students will need the following documents:

  • proof of address, such as a tenancy agreement or a bill
  • passport or another form of ID
  • student status confirmation or an attendance letter from the School

 

Student wellbeing and additional support

The School is committed to promoting student wellbeing and providing a supportive environment in which students can thrive both academically and personally

A range of pastoral, counselling, and wellbeing services are available to support students experiencing personal, emotional, or academic challenges. Students can access confidential counselling sessions with qualified mental health professionals, one-to-one wellbeing support, coaching and mentoring, and specialist assistance for those with additional learning needs

Support is also available to address matters such as stress and anxiety management, resilience building, homesickness, cultural adjustment, time management, motivation, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance

Through these services, the School seeks to ensure that all students have access to the guidance, resources, and support necessary to achieve their full potential and maintain positive wellbeing throughout their studies.

Students engage with leading creatives such as Rahul Mishra and Sarah Mower, gaining valuable insight into professional practice through industry projects and mentorships, including work with brands such as JW Anderson and projects with the renowned photographer Rankin, while developing hands-on experience and building their portfolios.
