Paris’s best fashion exhibition: craftsmanship and florals at Palais Galliera

Paris’s best fashion exhibition at Palais Galliera explores craftsmanship and florals, revealing the skills and artisans behind haute couture and textile art

Looking for the best fashion exhibition in Paris right now? As museums across the city vie for attention, one show at the Palais Galliera stands out for its rare focus on craftsmanship. Weaving, Embroidering, Embellishing: The Crafts and Trades of Fashion explores the techniques and specialist skills behind textile art, haute couture, and ready-to-wear through the enduring language of florals. It also examines their symbolism and uses, offering a refined alternative to blockbuster exhibitions. Here’s why it deserves a spot on your 2026 Paris itinerary.

When we think of balmy days, we think of flowers. And there were plenty at the Palais Galliera, just a 5-minute walk away from Istituto Marangoni Paris. In its underground Gabrielle Chanel Galleries, you can find the exhibition Weaving, Embroidering, Embellishing: the Crafts and Trades of Fashion, which pays homage to the art of craftsmanship, interpreted through a multitude of blossoming patterns.

Flowers have long held a special place in the history of clothing and fashion. They evoke the effervescence of nature, romance and symbolise renewal. Beyond their aesthetic appeal, floral motifs also serve as a powerful vehicle for artistic and technical experimentation. The exhibition uses the language of flowers as a guiding thread through centuries of textile innovation and artisanal mastery.

How Designers Use Florals to Construct Identity, Volume and Visual Impact

Imagine flowers embroidered in bursts of vivacious hues, used as striking appliqués, or rendered in delicate white lace. It’s remarkable how flowers can be manifested in so many breathtaking forms.

From a voluminous, deconstructed Comme des Garçons piece to a floor-skimming Gucci design that pairs bohemian blooms and chevrons, florals emerged in a variety of intriguing ways.

Spectators can trace how floral elements appear in everything from richly woven brocades of the 18th century to modern laser-printed fabrics, demonstrating both continuity and innovation in design through the ages.

Why Artificial Flowers Remain a Signature Craft in Haute Couture

A particularly fascinating aspect of the exhibition is its focus on artificial flowers, celebrating a craft that sits at the intersection of fashion and sculpture. Crafted from silk, paper, or other fine materials, these exquisite creations have long adorned garments, hats, and accessories.

The realism of these artificial flowers demands not only technical skill but also a keen sensitivity to form and colour. By displaying these objects alongside garments, Weaving, Embroidering, Embellishing: the Crafts and Trades of Fashion highlights how even the smallest embellishments enhance a design’s overall impact.

Haute Couture Craftsmanship: Who Makes Fashion Beyond the Runway

Instead of focusing solely on finished fashion pieces, the exhibition highlights the skilled artisans who bring these designs to life. Showcasing more than 350 objects, including historical garments, contemporary creations, tools, and textile samples, it reveals the depth of knowledge and precision required at each stage of production.

Perhaps the most thoughtful aspect is how the exhibit shines a spotlight on artisans working behind the scenes—embroiderers, textile designers, feather specialists, and floral makers—who have shaped the world of haute couture but are often unacknowledged.

By featuring both historic ateliers and contemporary creators, the exhibition highlights how traditions evolve while preserving exceptional savoir-faire. Interactive elements—like a magnifying glass alongside textile samples—invite visitors to get up close and appreciate the complexity of each piece.

Craftsmanship Over Time: How Historical Dress Continues to Define Modern Fashion

Historical garments with bustles stand alongside more streamlined contemporary pieces, creating a dialogue between past and present.

Many of the techniques on display have been passed down through generations, preserved within specialised workshops and ateliers. This continuity underscores the resilience of traditional craftsmanship, even as recent decades have prioritised speed and scalability, often overlooking and underprotecting these unique creative and cultural skills.

Today, as the industry grapples with questions of sustainability and ethics, celebrating these techniques—and the artisans behind them—fosters a deeper appreciation for fashion and for the people who bring it to life.

The Palais Galliera’s exhibition is an invitation to see fashion differently. Not only does it surround visitors with awe-inspiring works by Coco Chanel, Christian Dior, Cristóbal Balenciaga, Roger Vivier, and more, but it also encourages a closer look, revealing artistry in the details and highlighting the many hands behind each creation. By exploring floral motifs, it recognises the power of craftsmanship and its irreplaceable role in the world of fashion.
