Istituto Marangoni partners up with the iconic Katie Grand for an exclusive mentorship project.

09 December 2021

Istituto Marangoni London announces a special collaboration with one of the most iconic and influential professionals in the fashion world, Katie Grand. The collaboration will result in a series of masterclasses and workshops in which Katie Grand will share with the students of Istituto Marangoni London her extensive experience in the publishing and fashion industry, challenging them to create unique contents and communication strategies (for both on and off-line channels)  which will be pitched to The Perfect Magazine team.

Throughout her career, Katie has always championed and supported up-and-coming creatives: Lee Alexander McQueen, Matty Bovan, Tomo Koizumi, Richard Quinn, Yuhan Wang, as well as many others. She launched the iconic publication Dazed with Jefferson Hack and Rankin when only 22 years old. She went on to work as the Fashion Director at The Face, and created Pop magazine as a biannual for the same publishing house.

Following eight years and 20 issues of POP, she was invited by Condé Nast to launch a new biannual, which became LOVE Magazine, where she was Editor in Chief for 11 years. Katie has recently set up the new content agency and magazine 'The Perfect Magazine' immediately established as an unmissable point of reference among the independent publication. Aside from the world of media she is a creative consultant to some of the most world-renowned designers including Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Prada, Miu Miu and Bottega Veneta.

This strategic collaboration of Istituto Marangoni London with Grand will consist in workshops and talks throughout during the first academic semester. As the inspirational point of reference, Katie will be leading an open creative project in which groups of students will present different projects that could develop into potential editorial contents for the Perfect Magazine. Each week, students will pitch and present their concepts, with guidance and mentorship from Katie and her creative collaborators.  Tailor- made workshops drawn from and into the students ideas. culminating in a professional pitch to The Perfect Magazine team in February 2022

BA and MA students from Istituto Marangoni London will pitch their ideas and narratives to Katie Grand, and will receive feedback on the depth of their thinking, the rationale and the feasibility behind their proposed creative processes. The students will be advised on how to narrow down broad ideas into realistic conclusions, and be gaining various skills that are indispensable for working in the fashion industry, including teamwork, negotiation, project management and creative thinking. The mentorship of Katie Grand will provide the students with a great opportunity to translate academic and theoretical concepts into creative outcomes, capitalising on engaging with experiences that mirror practices in areas of styling, filming, communication, and creative direction.

The project compliments Istituto Marangoni philosophy and strategies around learning, teaching and industry readiness. It reflects the school’s commitment to engage students with activities that stem from our approaches to collaborations, publications, and industry readiness.

“It is outstanding for the London School to collaborate with Katie Grand on this exciting creative mentorship programme during the year. Seeing our students bristle with excitement to hear Katie speak and jiggle with anticipation before pitching to her and her creative collaborators takes their learning and understanding of the creative & luxury industries to a new level. Katie's generosity of time and motivation to drive new talents is indeed empowering to watch in action. I personally can not wait to see the creative projects devised under her mentorship ready for publication” says Charlotte Gorse - School Director, Istituto Marangoni London.

“Istituto Marangoni London is one of the leading institutions in the British fashion academic world, therefore when I was proposed to collaborate with them for a special mentorship project, I immediately found the idea interesting and exciting” says Katie Grand. “I thought it would have been super inspiring to meet and exchange fresh ideas with young talented students from all over the world, working on projects focused on creativity”.
