Past, Present and Future Continuous

Istituto Marangoni Firenze Art Show 2021

Past, Present and Future Continuous, curated by Elizaveta Reznikova, Arts Curating third year Student, invites us to perceive time in a fluid way through the use of moving images.

Past, present and future intersect continuously and the video installations on the display push us to acquire the awareness that every action is the result of our yesterday and will influence everyone's tomorrow.

With a reflective, political, playful, and ironic approach, the exhibition traces an imaginative timeline that begins with the beginning of the biodiversity crisis, represented by the sixth mass extinction that we still live today, to the point of projecting ourselves into a dystopian future of tarkowskyana memory. The few survivors will collect the legacy of the anthropic attitudes of today's human beings. Individuals of the future will be forced to rediscover the basics of interpersonal communication through a slow and difficult process of re-education towards others and the environment.

The video installations by Multimedia Arts third year Students Léa Colombier, Alexandra Konopleva and Yuyan Pan, reveal the value and condemnation of the passage of time. From an autobiographical point of view, with amateur videos on VHS, they face traumas from the past that affect the present. From an anthropological point of view, with environments and entities in 3D animation, they represent the ghosts of our future: the consequences of social dynamics that widen the gap between man and the environment by encouraging individualistic attitudes.

The exhibition includes the Ceiling Fresco project, a contest created by the artist Andy Picci (Lausanne, Switzerland, 1989) whose work revolves around the concepts of identity, fluidity, notoriety and the influence that social networks have in our present. The students of the second year of Istituto Marangoni Firenze were invited to interpret in a contemporary way the production of the frescoes that inhabit the ceilings of museums and historic buildings in the city of Florence for creating a capsule collection inspired by our artistic heritage. The result demonstrates how past, present and future easily coexist both in the field of visual arts and in fashion.
