Istituto Marangoni Mumbai x Zara
The Mumbai School in collaboration with Zara to deliver Fashion Retail Training
This season, Istituto Marangoni Mumbai partnered with Zara to deliver an immersive styling and trend training programme for the brand's retail teams. It came from a simple idea: the person on the shop floor deserves to understand fashion the way a designer does, not just the version of it printed on a hangtag.
The partnership itself is part of a longer tradition. Every year, Istituto Marangoni Mumbai's career services team runs training of this kind with a different luxury brand, and this time it was Zara's turn. Led by industry experts Kayaan Contractor and Aniket Satam, the session brought Zara's retail employees into a classroom setting for a day built around trend, colour and culture.
The aim was to help retail professionals speak about fashion with genuine confidence, rather than reciting facts from a briefing sheet in conversations that happen dozens of times a day on the shop floor.

The Idea Behind the Training
Most fashion retail training stops at product knowledge: what is in stock, what it costs, how it fits. This programme was built on a different premise.
If someone is going to sell fashion, the thinking goes, they should be able to talk about it the way it was designed to be understood, not just point to a rail and read out a price tag. That is the reasoning that shaped this styling training from the outset, and it set the tone for the rest of the day.
Rather than treating retail staff as an audience for a product briefing, Istituto Marangoni Mumbai treated them as students of fashion style itself, walking them through the same vocabulary and reasoning a design studio would use to build a collection.

The Industry Experts Behind the Training
Bringing that thinking to the shop floor took people who work in fashion every day.
Kayaan Contractor is a Mumbai-based fashion stylist, image-maker and educator, and a pioneer of fashion content creation in India, recognised through her platform Shapeshifter and the GQ Style Awards Digital Don title. She has also worked with retail brands such as H&M India on conscious fashion, which gives her a view of fashion that reaches well beyond the studio.
Aniket Satam is a fashion designer, brand consultant and lecturer, and the founder of the labels A+ and Pink Porcupines. A SketchtoStore winner and CMAI Star Designer of the Year, he has shown at Lakme Fashion Week and Bombay Times Fashion Week and designs for the young urban shopper Zara's teams meet every day.

What Happened Inside the Styling Training Session
A Trend Education Module Built Around the Season
Delivered through the eyes of a working stylist and a working designer, the training opened with a module on trend education. Teams were introduced to the season's key directions, the same kind of analysis that shapes a design studio's own process, translated for people who meet customers face to face every day.
Pop Culture and Digital Trends in the Curriculum
Alongside trend and colour, the curriculum brought in cultural touchpoints, pop culture references and the pace of digital virality that shapes how fashion spreads today.
This part of the training reflected how differently trends move now, often starting online and reaching the shop floor faster than a traditional forecasting cycle. It is familiar ground for Aniket, whose collections are known for vintage pop nostalgia and bold pattern play.
How Cultural Touchpoints Shaped the Conversation
A shopper asking why a certain colour or silhouette is suddenly everywhere this season is, in effect, asking a trend question, even if it doesn't sound like one. This part of the fashion retail training gave staff the language and the background to answer it, rather than defaulting to "it's popular right now."
This is also where the session went beyond a standard fashion styling training focused narrowly on outfit pairing, giving teams a fuller picture of why the season looks the way it does, not just a checklist for how to style it. Kayaan's own work, from gender-neutral styling to campaigns on beauty standards, shows how closely culture and fashion are tied.

What Retail Teams Walked Away With
The result, as the brief behind this training puts it, is retail professionals who don't just know the product, they know the season.
The training gave teams a foundation in:
- Understanding trends: Recognising why a colour, silhouette or style is gaining relevance.
- Explaining fashion: Turning that understanding into a simple, natural conversation with customers.
- Connecting culture and fashion: Relating trends to what customers may already be seeing online, in pop culture or elsewhere.
- Looking beyond the product: Understanding fashion principles that aren't tied to a particular Zara collection or season.
