Get the Barbie look, but don’t forget your make-up

Do you feel like your world has become a Barbie movie? Same here with the ultimate summer film coming up. Is your inbox brimming with tips and trends inspired by Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken? We feel you. But don’t expect to get rid of it anytime soon – the Barbiecore is here to stay, so you’ll quickly want to get a Barbie-style glow and shine.

Bubblegum pink lip gloss, extra-large eyelashes, blonde extensions and lots of glitter: that’s how Barbiecore is conquering Gen Z when it comes to beauty. This cultural movement is more than just aesthetic, as it’s taking over the Internet and the streets. Jumping on this phenomenon while conquering TikTok, makeup, skincare, and haircare brands are now offering all-pink beauty capsules.

According to a study by Klarna, Europe’s leading online shopping platform, the #barbiemakeup wave (353 million views) is also boosting makeup and perfume sales.

In France, in the last few weeks, the increase in numbers is nothing less than impressive: 19% more transparent glosses, 15% more glitter eye shadows for the eyelids, 12% more products with rhinestones to apply on the face, and 19% more lipsticks with pinkish shades. Pastel-coloured clips studded with little hearts and bows are also popular to complete the look and fix your ponytail – back in fashion, thanks to the Barbie film.

To embrace the trend, the American brand NYX has launched a limited-edition capsule featuring a blush, a butter gloss, false eyelashes (the Jumbo Lashes with rosy shades) and eye pencils (coming in pink and electric blue) in playful packaging evoking childhood games and girlie style.

However, luxury brands have their offerings as well. For Chanel’s 2024 resort show in Los Angeles, make-up artist Lisa Butler chose a retro 70s mood: an eyeliner line encircling the eye and a peach-coloured blush applied to the lips and cheeks.

Make-up artist and fashion backstage queen Pat McGrath offers a palette of shimmer eyeshadows and highlighters, even worn on the red carpet by actress Nicola Coughlan at the Barbie film’s London premiere as part of her Pat McGrath Labs summer launches.

Regarding fragrances, Carolina Herrera pushes forward with her Good Girl Blush, a vegan eau de parfum with romantic notes of ylang-ylang, rose and vanilla in a tenderly pink stiletto-shaped bottle.

There is also room for men’s trends in this Barbie world – or Barbie Land: soft pink lips and smooth, well-groomed skin for a fresh, neat look like Harry Styles and Timothée Chalamet.
