Yoox founder Federico Marchetti on how to boost your business

“Don’t be afraid to take risks, to fail, to experiment, and to test yourselves. Never feel inferior to anyone, never be afraid to be curious, and have the courage to approach those with more experience than you.” With these empowering words, Federico Marchetti began his address to the audience and the attending students amidst the vibrant Pop Art-inspired poppy installations at Fondazione Sozzani, where he presented his autobiography, ‘Le Avventure di un Innovatore’ (The Adventures of an Innovator) prefaced by Giorgio Armani.

Born in Romagna and hailing from a middle-class family of the 1970s, Federico Marchetti currently serves as the Chairman of The Sustainable Markets Initiative’s Fashion Task Force established by King Charles III. Additionally, he holds a position as a board member of Giorgio Armani S.p.A. But why does everyone, everywhere, want Marchetti as part of their team?

A seasoned technology entrepreneur with a strong focus on sustainability and a pioneer of innovation in the fashion industry, Marchetti has always blazed trails where others have not. His success story began in 2000 when he founded Yoox, the world’s first lifestyle and fashion e-commerce platform. In 2015, he orchestrated its merger with Net-a-Porter, creating the global leader in luxury fashion e-commerce, the Yoox Net-a-Porter Group, causing a shift in the consumer habits of more than one billion visitors per year in the process. Through these endeavours, Marchetti has profoundly impacted and moulded the landscape of online clothing shopping habits, earning him the title of the one who “put fashion on the net,” as The New York Times once stated.

Charting the journey of this innovator: it all began in a warehouse on the outskirts of Bologna, the birthplace of Yoox. With strategic brilliance, he acquired his foremost rival, Net-a-Porter, and fostered the expansion of the YNAP group, later selling it to Richemont. Along the way, he engaged with industry titans and ascended to the role of advisor to King Charles III.

Such is the captivating essence of ‘The Adventures of an Innovator.’ Within its pages, Marchetti, alongside journalist Daniela Hamaui, provides a profound exploration of his personal odyssey – that of a provincial youth journeying to America in pursuit of education, captivated by the boundless potential of the Web, and subsequently returning to Italy to carve out his path in founding his own enterprise.

Predicting the Future: Federico Marchetti’s Pioneering Vision for Online Fashion Shopping in 2000

Long story short, after obtaining a degree in economics and an MBA from Columbia University in New York, Federico Marchetti had a remarkably simple yet ground-breaking idea in 2000. This concept not only transformed how consumers shop for fashion items but also reshaped the business models of luxury fashion giants. Upon his return to Italy, Marchetti established Yoox as the world’s inaugural fashion e-commerce platform, originating from a warehouse on the outskirts of Bologna.

“The concept behind my Yoox platform was straightforward,” explained Marchetti. “I brought together top brands, unsold items, and vintage collections. It was a place where you could find everything that wasn’t easily available elsewhere—a mix-and-match of new-age fashion and old garments. A business model that addressed companies’ problems of where to store unsold stock and also introduced a new way of shopping.”

Despite considering himself a digital innovator but an outsider in the fashion world, Marchetti asserted that he launched his fashion e-commerce when the sector was still in its infancy, witnessing swift growth as a result.

"I advise young people to always set themselves apart, especially in today’s highly competitive fashion e-commerce landscape, where all platforms seem similar. The result of this is that consumers will not differentiate between e-commerce and simply opt for the lowest price available. Break away from conventional patterns and create your competitive advantage based on Italian design, art, and culture” – Federico Marchetti, tech entrepreneur and sustainable fashion pioneer

Sustainability is Innovation; Innovation is for Sustainability

Innovation is at the core of Marchetti’s remarkable journey, with Yoox standing as Italy’s first “unicorn.” It serves as the driving force that, amidst a life filled with unexpected twists and fortuitous encounters, has connected him with fashion luminaries and tech titans.

Yoox is undeniably a reflection of Marchetti’s profound interest in technology, humanism, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and, above all, sustainability. Sustainability has been the guiding principle behind not only the decision to give unsold garments from top brands a second chance but also the transformation of his company into a leader in social and environmental responsibility. This transformation is exemplified by providing each garment with a digital passport, ensuring transparency and traceability throughout the production process.

“I started experimenting with the digital passport in 2017,” Marchetti explained, “envisioning a barcode that, once scanned, would reveal the garment’s designer, akin to a genie emerging from a lamp. They would elucidate the manufacturing process and materials used, empowering consumers to make informed decisions and opt for longer-lasting garments with minimal environmental impact. Simultaneously, it would offer companies the opportunity to embrace transparency.”

Without a doubt, Federico Marchetti, a visionary immersed in the world of digital innovation, has consistently embraced an optimistic outlook on the technological future. He views AI, often met with scepticism by many, as a powerful tool capable of driving progress and promoting greater eco-sustainable responsibility.

“Through my intuition, I’ve perceived and sensed things that eluded others,” Marchetti said. “I took risks by choosing the less conventional path, and despite numerous failures and setbacks, I eventually saw the beacon of success. Yoox emerged as the result of my innovative, innate intuition—a trait I continually ‘trained’ and cultivated through my hunger for knowledge and unyielding curiosity.” Concluding his reflection, he stated, “And this is precisely what I advise the younger generations.”

“Stay hungry for knowledge and curious. Don't be afraid to take on the most challenging and unconventional paths. Even when faced with criticism and scepticism, breaking away from conventional norms can lead to true success, both professionally and personally” – Federico Marchetti
