Istituto Marangoni Mumbai students had the privilege of engaging with Architectural Digest India's Komal Sharma and renowned architects Alan Abraham, Nisha Jamwal, and Shruti Jalan to discuss design practices.

Istituto Marangoni Mumbai recently had the distinct honor of hosting a dynamic discussion featuring Architectural Digest (AD) India's Komal Sharma and prominent architects Alan Abraham, Neesha Alwani, and Shruti Jalan. The event provided #IMStudents with a unique opportunity to gain valuable knowledge into the multifaceted world of architecture and design from leading industry voices.

Komal Sharma, editor of Architectural Digest India, initiated the discussion by sharing the role of AD in showcasing diverse design approaches and connecting with audiences. Going on to emphasize AD's commitment to featuring work that is both culturally rooted and contemporary, citing the example of NSA's restaurant design that blends Art Deco elements with a modern aesthetic. 

 
The Design Journey: Key Takeaways from NSA

Neesha Alwani and Shruti Jalan of NSA shared individual design journeys, offering valuable advice to aspiring designers. Stressing the importance of gaining practical experience, building a strong network, and understanding the business aspects of running a design practice.  

NSA highlighted key lessons learned from personal experiences, including the significance of contracts, time management, and client relations. Even emphasizing the importance of maintaining individuality and resisting the pressure to conform to trends.  

 
Expanding the Scope: Abraham John Architects

Alan Abraham of Abraham John Architects shared the firm's diverse portfolio, showcasing projects ranging from residential interiors to urban design initiatives. Abraham emphasized the importance of contextual design, responding to the specific characteristics of each site and its surroundings.  

Abraham also highlighted the firm's commitment to public spaces and urban improvement, showcasing projects aimed at enhancing pedestrian access and creating functional public areas within the city. Students were encouraged to broaden creative perspectives and explore opportunities beyond traditional architectural practice.  

 
Navigating Career Paths and Design Choices

The discussion also included valuable insights on navigating career paths in the design field. The speakers emphasized the importance of gaining experience, continuous learning, and finding one's own voice as a designer.
