Fashion Design & The Art of Textiles and Print


The art of textiles and print is a fine balance of fashion, design, craft, artistic ability, application and production. On this course participants are introduced to the main techniques of textile design and printing, and gain an understanding of the key processes and production methods of fabrics, materials and textiles, as well as the importance of sustainability in print production, and dyeing. The course also looks at how creative research assists in the development and creation of original prints and surface embellishments for the fashion, art, and design industries, while also investigating trends and the vast and exciting world textile design.

Week 1

The course begins with an introduction to creative research methods in order to encourage creativity and increase participants understanding of textile design. Practical work is introduced starting with expressive mark making and art or painting techniques generating unexpected visual results that can be applied to design ideas.  Alongside practical classes a wider look at the context of textiles and print related industries including interiors, couture, and contemporary art and design, further assists in the development of ideas and innovative design, as well as understanding the role of the textile designer, and undeniably, the influence and role of textiles in everyday life. Participants take a look at the key printing techniques including block, stencil, heat press (foil and flock), screen, and hand painting and the visual characteristics they produce on cloth. They are introduced to various processes and methods including traditional dying techniques, and modern printing, design, and innovative digital print techniques.

Week 2

Structured as a creative textile workshop, participants are given the chance to select and experiment with print and embellishment techniques in beading, handcraft, or creative surface decoration and manipulation techniques. They are encouraged to produce textile swatch designs, or paper designs, to create a textile book. Participants are also encouraged to investigate and interpret fashion and textile design trends past and present. The overall aim of the course is to encourage design ideas, reinterpreting heritage crafts with a contemporary feel that can be applied to any area of the fashion, luxury, art, design and creative industries

Additional study for core course · 2 week

This short course provides an introduction to the fundamentals of fashion design, how to formulate ideas and translate them into a visual representation. Participants will be introduced to key notions in the fashion design process and to basic drawing and illustration techniques. The course also explores the role of the fashion designer via a vocational learning approach.


Week 1

The start of the course introduces fashion drawing and design techniques followed by an analysis of the founding principles of developing a fashion collection including: silhouette, colour charts, fabrics and accessories, right through to the design and creation of outfits. Participants are then introduced to the fashion silhouette, colour palettes, the appropriate use of fabrics, and the principle financial considerations of designing for fashion.

Week 2

Starting from creative research to foster personal inspiration, participants are guided to design and develop ideas into basic silhouettes and coordinate outfits with fabric and colour selection. The focus on trend research looks into its origins together with market relevance, and a brief analysis on how trends influence and help form a contemporary collection. Participants put into practice the acquired knowledge and prepare a basic collection of work.
