Designers from Istituto Marangoni Milano Take Centre Stage in a Sky Arte Docu-Film

A television crew followed the creative journey of 10 standout students behind the 90th-anniversary fashion show. The result is a compelling story that highlights the school’s unique educational approach.

SKY STUDENTS

The countdown begins. Adrenaline rises. Final details are checked before the soundtrack fills the air. Backstage, hands adjust fabric folds, eyes scan the big picture. These are the moments leading up to the catwalk show—the culmination of months of intense and rigorous work. Would you like to discover all the secrets behind this milestone event? Take a peek behind the scenes of a show that rivals those of the great haute couture maisons.

Sky-produced documentary, available on NOW and on demand, tells the captivating story of Istituto Marangoni Milano’s brightest talents as they approach the defining moment of their educational journey: the fashion show. And what a show it is - organised to celebrate the school’s 90th anniversary. Titled "Inside Marangoni. Where Talent Is Born", it follows this highly competitive journey with the precision of reportage and the mounting rhythm of a thriller.

Fashion Design students begin working on the project almost a year in advance. The first hurdle is the rigorous selection process: from 250 finalist finalists, only 40 get to present their collections to a jury of industry leaders - including Alessandro Sartori (Artistic Director, Zegna), Francesca Ragazzi (Head of Editorial Content, Vogue Italia), Marco Rambaldi (Creative Director, Marco Rambaldi), Sara Sozzani Maino (Creative Director, Fondazione Sozzani) and Stefania Valenti (Managing Director, Istituto Marangoni). Ultimately, just ten of them will see their creations walk the runway before of a prestigious audience of guests, industry experts, journalists and influencers.

SKY JURY

The documentary details each stage of the process: from the theme and material selection to fittings led by Director of Education Diana Marian Murek and Programme Leader Antonio Patruno Randolfi, through to the runway rehearsals. Passion, commitment and shared energy fill the air, making this experience particularly moving.

SKY FITTINGS

The talents behind the fashion show hail from all over the world and are tomorrow’s creative leaders. Their works in progress already tell powerful, personal fashion stories, showing how a vision evolves, how it interacts with volumes and fabrics, and how technology meets creativity. This behind-the-scenes view reveals fashion’s creative dimension at its most authentic and forward-looking.

«This documentary authentically portrays what happens every day within our school: constant research, passion, vision and attention to detail. It reflects our commitment to training new generations of talent, guiding them towards a conscious and responsible relationship with the professional world» says Paolo Meroni, School Director of Istituto Marangoni Milano.

The documentary, created within Sky’s new creative laboratoryContent Factory, will premiere on Sky Arte on 17 January at 8.30 pm and will be available for streaming on NOW and on demand.

Missoni Sparks Creativity at Istituto Marangoni Milano

The Kaleidoscope Project

When Missoni calls, Istituto Marangoni Milano responds with enthusiasm, showcasing the future-oriented creativity that has always set it apart. Founded in 1953 by Ottavio and Rosita Missoni, the maison - an icon of Italian design and fashion -launched an inspiring mentorship challenge for all first-year students. Drawing on the brand’s rich archives, the brief invited participants to reinterpret multiplicity and metamorphosis by creating a series of mood boards, conceived as a true kaleidoscope of visions that brings tradition and innovation into conversation. The first mood board, Discover Yourself, explored each student’s personal visual identity, while the subsequent boards shifted focus to Missoni’s brand identity and what the maison represents for each creator today.

Five Award-Winning Projects

Among the 30 projects initially shortlisted, five received awardswith the winning students also earning financial contributions from the School to support their talent and continue their studies. Their creative drive demonstrates how Missoni’s vision remains extremely relevant and continues to inspire new generations of designers. From restaurants to capsule collections, prints, fragrances, and new retail experiences, the proposals deliver a  multidimensional interpretation of the Missoni lifestyle.

The Winning Projects

Asia Bianchi, Fashion Design & Accessories Student, created a knitwear capsule collection inspired by «the Space Age influence of the 1960s». The project reworks some of the maison’s most iconic prints and patterns, combining them into a patchwork that emerges in light, dynamic, and playful silhouettes.

Zlata Zubkova, a Fashion Product Student, envisions Tropico Missoni - a restaurant «where the brand’s aesthetic meets tropical sensuality». This space merges nature and design, tradition and modernity, Italy and exoticism into a vibrant visual kaleidoscope.

The theme of transformation continues with IPSE, a fragrance designed by Sofia Zimmardi, Fragrances & Cosmetics Product and Communication Student: it’s «a perfume in constant evolution, which changes over time and reacts to body temperature and emotional state». The bottle is inspired by an illustration from the Missoni Fall/Winter 1968 collection depicting two women, who symbolise the duality between outward appearance and true identity.

Julia Migli Espinoza, a designer from the Fashion Design & Accessories course, reinterprets Missoni patterns by drawing inspiration from the concentric stratifications of agate—a stone with warm, deep hues—using it as a starting point «to explore the interaction between past and present».

Finally, Kaleidoroom by Missoni - a project by Iulianna Shilova, an aspiring stylist from the course Fashion Styling & Creative Direction course - is a space designed for younger audiences, to be integrated into the brand’s flagship stores. This colourful, immersive environment reflects the maison’s philosophy and offers families a new kind of shopping experience. «Missoni could become the first luxury brand to engage and build loyalty with its future audience from childhood, through play, aesthetics, and a strong sense of belonging.»
